Shoot with a Quick Release Like Cole Caufield – Speed Over Power for More Goals

Improves

When it comes to pure goal scorers, few match the quick release of Cole Caufield. His ability to get the puck off his stick in an instant makes him one of the most dangerous snipers in the NHL. In this drill, Coach Dino, a former Olympian and scoring leader, shows you how to develop that same lightning-fast release to beat goalies before they’re ready.

Why Quick Release Beats Power

Most players think harder is better, but in reality, quicker is better than harder. A goalie can handle a hard shot if they see it coming. But if you get the puck off your stick before they’re set, you drastically increase your scoring chances.

How to Master the Quick Release

Focus on Speed, Not Power
Your goal is to release the puck as fast as possible—not to crush it. A fast, deceptive shot is harder for the goalie to track.

Don’t Let the Goalie Set Up
The longer you hold the puck, the more time the goalie has to get square. Get the puck off your stick before they can react.

Practice the Release from Different Angles
Don’t always shoot from the same spot. Work on releasing quickly from various positions to keep goalies guessing.

Smooth, Compact Motion
Eliminate extra movement in your shot. A compact release is faster and more deceptive.

Coach Dino’s Pro Tip:

As you approach your shot, focus on just getting the puck away fast. Think less about aiming and more about catching the goalie before they’re set.
